Certain bacteria present in the oral cavity are likely to cause harm because they can use these sugars and starches. Bacteria called streptococci mutans and lactobacillus are two types of harmful bacteria. There is a small amount of these bacteria found normally in our mouth. Brushing and flossing keeps check on these bacteria. It must be done regularly and preferably after every meal.

If brushing is not done properly, bacterial plaque builds up. Plaque is a sticky, yellow, translucent substance that covers our teeth.

The plaque bacteria can be removed by brushing at least twice a day and flossing once a day. But sometimes, they may be present in higher levels and cause harm to our teeth in the form of dental Caries.

Caries is most common in children. Caries can lead to tooth decay. Once tooth decay reaches the root pulp of the tooth, an endodontic or root canal treatment is necessary to remove the decay.

A dentist can detect the presence of decay by an X-ray. In root canal treatment, the dentist drills a hole in the tooth. The decayed portion and debris is cleaned and disinfected. A temporary filling is placed. This is then replaced by a permanent filling or restoration and the tooth can be protected by a crown or cap.

One way to prevent this is to maintain proper oral hygiene by regular brushing and flossing. A visit to the dentist once in six months is essential. A dentist can detect early signs of Caries and provide treatment. An initial treatment can prevent further damage to the teeth.
